Reframe Grades as Potential Qualifying Scores on the AP Exam

Purpose

To prevent students from falling into the trap of pursuing perfection and missing their own growth by reframing their achievements in a growth-minded way.

Outcome

Students will learn that their efforts are not failures; a renewed sense of motivation and accomplishment will push them to continue expending effort through the latter parts of the school year.

Action Steps

  • Pull student work samples from the beginning of the school year and similar assignments from their current work.
  • Provide feedback to students showing how their skills or content knowledge have grown since the first assignments.
  • Allow students to make the connection that their numerical grades are a small part of their overall picture of positive growth.
